An Americano is made by adding hot water to an espresso, retaining a similar strength but gaining a somewhat different taste to the latter drink. The water is added to an espresso that has already been made rather than drawing more water through the coffee granules. Because of this Americano drinkers should typically look for an espresso coffee machine if they are interested in making this particular type of drink. Espresso machines, on top of making espressos and Americanos, can also make be used to make lattes and cappuccinos.
