A cafetiere, also known as a French press, coffee press or coffee plunger is a simple hand activated plunging device for brewing coffee. Probably originating in France in the 1850s, the cafetiere was patented in 1931 by Attilio Calimani. The device works by plunging a filter-like device down a glass beaker causing the coffee infused water to be separated from the coffee grounds. The mesh like component used in the cafetiere is not truly a filter and some of the compounds left in this unfiltered coffee are thought to lead to higher cholesterol.

The cafetiere has been a popular method of brewing coffee for many decades due to its simplicity and after-dinner elegance. On top of this cafetieres do not use electricity so they are highly portable and can be used in a much wider amount of situations than devices that require a mains plug. Coffee made from a cafetiere is usually stronger and thicker than drip down coffee but can turn bitter after a short amount of time.
