The word percolator is derived from the word percolate which means to pass through a permeable substance to extract a soluble constituent. One of the more popular methods of brewing coffee until the early 1970s, a percolator operates by pushing hot water through the coffee grounds into a separate chamber. The percolator declined in popularity after a resurgence of interest in cafetieres and espresso machines. Percolators had often received criticism for using too high a brewing temperature resulting in decreased quality and forcing already brewed water back through the coffee granules resulting in over-extraction. However, percolator enthusiasts insist that these devices produce a more robust cup of coffee.

Percolators have traditionally been popular with campers and outdoor folk as it can be used without the need for electricity. Its simple design makes the percolator one of the easiest methods of brewing coffee, and although some people say quality is compromised by this brewing method others swear by it as the best way to make coffee.
